Louie – Redesign of Historical Font
Font Louie – redesign of legendary typeface Romain du Roi created for Louis XIV,
called King Sunshine during the period of French Enlightenment and Rationalism.
In the redesign and digitization of the typeface, I wanted to preserve Jaugeon’s ideal of rationalist construction. In the redesign, I analyze and reconsider the original geometric construction. The individual elements of the geometric construction are applied with respect to maintaining the natural form, and, if necessary, I prefer adjustments according to optical rules. All modifications do not disturb or diminish the ideal, but respect it and preserve the original character of the typeface.
Paul McNeil – author of the book The Visual History of Type, educator, and co-founder of the London design studio MuirMcNeil, chose my font for the typesetting of his comprehensive book on the typefaces of the legendary Parisian studio M/M Paris (Michaël Amzalag and Mathias Augustyniak). The book was published by the renowned publisher Thames & Hudson.
